This national award recognizes excellence in urbanism and sustainability. From more than 130 submissions, Baldwin Park was singled out for innovation, environmental sensitivity and mobility. Baldwin Park successfully demonstrated its relationship to the Charter for the New Urbanism’s vision of a sustainable built and natural environment, and is cited as an important model for growth and redevelopment that promotes livability and community value. Baldwin Park, an 1,100-acre neighborhood built on the site of the former Orlando Naval Training Center, embodies the principles of New Urbanism: a mix of residential and commercial uses, in a pedestrian-friendly, compact community. New Urbanism is considered a sustainable antidote to suburban sprawl because it encourages people to live, work and shop in close proximity—reducing reliance on the automobile and encouraging social interaction. Baldwin Park is now home to more than 6,000 residents and 75 businesses. Construction began in 2001 and expected to be complete in 2013. The community previously received top national awards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Urban Land Institute, the National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of Home Builders. << Back to News Listings Back to Top |
